Peg Buman is a community health consultant in the Office of Technical Assistance, Division of Environmental Health at the Iowa Department of Public Health. She acts as coordinator and community liaison for the Comprehensive Assessment of Rural Health in Iowa Project, which is a rural health surveillance pilot project examining potential links between environmental hazards and health effects. In that role, she oversees the collection and management of local health encounter data and facilitates the collection and analysis of geocoded environmental data in relation to where people live. Prior to joining the Iowa Department of Public Health in 2005, she gained more than 20 years' experience as a nurse clinician and educator, county sanitarian and watershed planner. She led the development and implementation of the Farm*A*Syst program in Iowa; conducting focus groups, developing educational materials and assessment tools, and conducting on-farm environmental assessments. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in nursing.
