Nancy H. Hall, Microbiologist, University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory
Nancy Hall received her BS degree in zoology (medical technology) from Iowa State University in 1977 and started her microbiology career at the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory working as a public health microbiologist in the clinical microbiology area. As supervisor of the environmental microbiology section, she is responsible for the supervision of scientists, microbiologists, and technicians performing various environmental microbiology and chemistry parameters (e.g., coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Legionella, Salmonella, food and water borne outbreak investigations, etc.). This group works closely with private individuals, university departments, county sanitarians, and governmental agencies offering technical assistance and guidance for their water quality needs. She serves on the AWWA Joint Task Group for Standard Methods Section 9020 (Quality Assurance), 9223 (Chromogenic Substrate for Coli form Test), 9221 (Multiple-Tube Fermentation), 9213 (Recreational Water), and chairs the Joint Task Group for Section 9220 (Membrane Filter). She also is a member of the Microbiology Revision Subcommittee for the EPA Manual for the Certification of Laboratories Analyzing Drinking Water, Iowa Food Safety Task Force, and she is the editor for the Iowa Groundwater Quarterly. She is UHL’s principal analyst for the testing of cryptosporidium under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Her current research interests are bacterial source tracking using the RiboPrinter, and method development for pathogen recovery in environmental samples.
